EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
