Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
